An alert resident who spotted someone breaking into a home helped spark a multi-agency search that ended with the capture of a suspected break-in suspect Tuesday morning in Hamilton.
At about 9:12 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21, the Hamilton Police Department responded to a report of someone breaking into a home in the Forest Street neighborhood.
An alert resident had observed a suspicious person jump a fence into a side yard and attempt to get into a home.
Officers from the Wenham and Essex police departments were called and the suspect was contained in a wooded area.
“He was eventually spotted by a second alert resident and a construction crew working in the area who assisted in detaining the suspect until he was taken into custody by police,” said Hamilton Police Lt. Scott Janes.
The search also involved K9 units from the Massachusetts State Police and Essex County Sheriff’s Department, which helped recover additional evidence. The Massachusetts State Police Air wing also assisted in the search.
The suspect has been charged with breaking and entering and illegal possession of narcotics. There was no one home at the time of the incident and the investigation continues.
