Trash, recycling and compost is now being collected on a weekly basis in Hamilton. The move comes after a vote this week by the Board of Selectmen to support moving from biweekly to weekly trash collection.
Residents may now use their black barrel each week to dispose of trash. The blue pay-as-you-throw bag price will also be going up to $2.50 per bag from $1 for a small bag and $1.75 for a large bag. The date of the price change has yet to be determined. The blue bags can still be used if trash doesn’t fit in the black barrel.
A sticker program will also be implemented for bulky items at a cost of $15 per item, with a limit of one item per week.
Town Manager Michael Lombardo said that with the new collection company, Casella Waste Systems, the cost of collection has gone up and bag revenue will also drop by about $40,000 because of the move to weekly collection.
Lombardo said it is still important for residents to remember that they should try to recycle and compost as much as they can.
