Shotgun Deer Hunting Season Underway – Use Caution

IMG_3080The shotgun deer hunting season starts Monday and there are several areas in Hamilton where you may see hunters.

Hamilton police say there are no specific alerts for hunters in Hamilton, but some basics about hunting to remember are that the shotgun season runs from Monday, Nov. 28 to Saturday, Dec. 10.

Hunting hours begin a half hour before sunrise and close a half hour after sunset. Hunting is not allowed on Sundays.

During shotgun deer season hunters may use shotguns not larger than 10 gauge, bows and arrows, or muzzleloaders not smaller than .44 caliber or larger than .775 caliber, according to the state Department of Fish and Game. Rifled barrel shotguns are legal during shotgun deer season.

All hunters, including bowhunters, must wear a minimum of 500 square inches of “hunter orange” on their head, chest, and back during shotgun and muzzleloader seasons. A cap and vest are sufficient, according to Fish and Game.
